The Rising Together, Thriving Together Conference is a unique opportunity for continuing and prospective UCI undocumented students and staff to spend a day together to meet one another, network, and build community within UCI.

Set Hernandez Rongkilyo
Set Hernandez Rongkilyo is a filmmaker and community organizer whose roots come from Bicol, Philippines. As a queer, undocumented immigrant, they dedicate their filmmaking to expand the portrayal of their community on screen. Set directed/produced the award-winning short documentary “COVER/AGE” (2019) about healthcare expansion for undocumented adults. An alumnus of the Disruptors Fellowship, Set is also developing a TV comedy pilot and a feature-length screenplay. Set served as Impact Producer for projects such as "In Plain Sight" (2020) by Cassils and Rafa Esparza, and the award-winning "Call Her Ganda" (Tribeca, 2018) by PJ Raval. Their work-in-progress documentary, "unseen," has been supported by the Sundance Institute, NBCUniversal, Field of Vision, among others. Since 2010, Set has been organizing around migrant justice issues from education equity to deportation defense. They are a co-founder of the Undocumented Filmmakers Collective which promotes equity for undocumented immigrants in the film industry. Above all, Set is the fruit of their parents' sacrifices, their siblings' resilience, and their community's nurturing.

Katherine Trujillo | UCI DREAM Center Student Staff
Katherine Trujillo is a third-year psychology major aspiring to pursue a career in the field of industrial-organizational psychology.
Jacqueline Marquez | UCI DREAM Center Student Staff
Jacqueline Marquez is a first-generation college student majoring in Criminology, Law, and Society as a first-year student. She is currently part of the student admin staff at the UCI DREAM Center and a socials volunteer at the Latinx Resource Center. Jacqueline's aspirations for the future are to attend law school and become an immigration attorney!
Lenin Flores Rodriguez | UCI DREAM Center Student Staff
Lenin Flores is a fourth-year undergrad majoring in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Accounting. Her passion for the undocumented community inspired her to be part of the DREAM Center as a student staff assistant. Lenin's long-term goals are to become a CPA where she can work with clients preparing tax returns and auditing. Some of her passions include gardening, reading, and ancient history.
Yoselin Lopez Tellez | UCI DREAM Center Student Staff
Yoselin Lopez is a third-year student at UC Irvine double majoring in Sociology and Education. Her hometown is Bell Gardens, California and she works at the DREAM Center as a student staff helping other students navigate through the DREAM Center. A life goal that Yoselin has is to create her own mentoring program in her hometown to guide underrepresented undocumented students.
Vanessa Rodas | UCI DREAM Center Student Staff
Vanessa Rodas is a first-generation college student whose hometown is South Central Los Angeles. She is currently a third-year studying Chicano Latino Studies and Sociology aspiring to become a High School or College counselor in hopes to assist minorities in their pathway to higher education. Throughout her years at UCI, Vanessa has been a part of numerous organizations like Hermanas Unidas de UCI, Student Staff at the DREAM Center, We Rise Ambassador at the Womxn’s Center for Success and Peer Mentor at the Disability Center. Each supports her goal of graduating and finding a community at UC Irvine!

Gilberto Osuna-Leon | UCI DREAM Center Scholar in Residence, UCI School of Medicine
Gilberto Osuna-Leon is a current MS1 in the PRIME-LC program with the UCI School of Medicine. He is originally from Mazatlan, Sinaloa but immigrated to the United States at the age of four, and was raised in Madison, Wisconsin. Gilberto is a queer, Latinx immigrant who is DACAmented and has experienced systemic inequalities from a young age. His particular interest is in social justice for undocumented immigrant communities and LGBTQ+ communities. He is a co-founder of Dreamers of Wisconsin, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness surrounding undocumentedness and tackling policy that prevents vulnerable communities from accessing higher education. As a future physician. Gilberto hopes to have a platform from which he can create spaces for undocumented and queer youth to celebrate their identity and have equal access to culturally competent care.
Barbara Martinez Neda | UCI DREAM Center Scholar in Residence, Ph.D. Student in Computer Science
Barbara is a Scholar-in-Residence at the Dream Center where she mentors and helps undergraduate students further develop their professional skills. She is a 3rd-year Computer Science Ph.D. student, and her research focuses on exploring applications of machine learning tools in education to maximize student success.
Carlo Chunga Pizarro | UCI DREAM Center Scholar In Residence, Ph.D. Student in Urban Planning and Public Policy
Carlo is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Urban Planning and Public Policy Department. He is originally from Piura, Peru, but immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 7 and was raised in Texas. Their research focuses on the disproportionate impact disasters have on undocumented individuals in the disaster planning process. Carlo is a Scholars-in-Residence mentor where he works to provide professional development to undocumented undergraduates regarding their post-graduate plans.
Diana Carreño | UCI DREAM Center Scholar in Residence, Ph.D. Candidate in Pharmaceutical Sciences
Diana Carreño is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She is a member of Dr. Shahrdad Lotfipour’s lab. Her research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of adolescent drug addiction. She previously was awarded the UCI Office of Inclusive Excellence Ambassador Summer Fellowship. In addition to research, she mentors undergraduates in STEM to help them achieve their career and personal goals. Having previously served for two years as a mentor at the UCI DREAM Center, she was selected to co-lead their Scholars-in-Residence program where she works to provide professional development to undocumented undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, she is a Leadership Coach for Diverse Educational Community and Doctoral Experience: Partnering in Leadership for Undergraduate Students (DECADE PLUS) Program by mentoring Chancellor’s Excellence Scholars.

Julieta Alvarado | UCI ANTrepreneur Center Student Staff
Julieta Alvarado is a fourth-year Sociology student passionate about helping others with their startup ideas, and personal/professional journeys. Julieta is a first-generation immigrant student, born in Argentina and raised in the inland empire, California. She is driven to help her community with experiences in immigrant nonprofits from being a founder of an undocumented resource start-up, to now a student consultant and media manager at the UCI ANTrepreneur Center.
Julieta has participated in several community leadership board positions at UCI such as Mesa Unida, Latino Business Student Association, as well as being an active delegate for nonprofits in Washington DC for bills such as HR6 Dream & Promise Act–to support the immigrant community.
As the ANTrepreneur Center’s content strategist and business consultant, Julieta is the host of the center's soon to be launched– “Ascend” podcast-with goals to provide students with our entrepreneurial resources and to share startup stories.
Julieta is graduating in June with goals of entering the tech industry and creating an inclusive consulting practice for women and minorities.
Daniel Vega | UCI ANTrepreneur Center Student Staff
Daniel Vega is a third year Applied Physics student focused on helping bring equitable change to those who have not had the same privilege as others, he looks towards innovation and entrepreneurship as the vehicle for change. Daniel is a first-generation immigrant student born in Colombia and raised in Orange County. He is driven to create tools and solutions to some of the most pressing problems of his community. He started a company during his time in UCI called Recreate Energy. Recreate Energy is an energy technology company focused on turning microalgae into renewable crude oil. He currently works as the Lead Engineer at the ANTrepreneur Center and helps student teams with any software or hardware engineering problems.

Jenniffer Perez Lopez | PhD Student in Sociology
Jenniffer Perez Lopez is a second year PhD student at UCI's Sociology Department and is currently working on her master's paper on media as a situational trigger for undocumented students. They have a variety of interests such as transnationalism, Central America, and mixed-status families. She graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2020 with a double major in Intensive Psychology and Sociology. She is originally from the Bay Area and identifies as a first generation student, Guatemalan, queer and a DACA recipient.
Martha Morales Hernandez | PhD Candidate in Sociology
Martha Morales Hernandez is a doctoral candidate in sociology at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). She received her B.A. and M.A. in sociology from UCI. Her research agenda aims to identify ways to better support and promote the educational success and wellbeing of undocumented college students. Her current research explores emotional distress and psychological wellbeing among undocumented college students in California. Her research has been published in Journal of Latinos and Education, Race and Social Problems, and Law and Social Inquiry.
Trinidad Alcalá-Arcos | UCI School of Medicine, PRIME - LC Program
Trinidad Alcalá-Arcos is a proud immigrant from Mexico, the first in her family to attain a postsecondary education at UC Davis and now the first to pursue a doctorate degree at UC Irvine in the PRIME-LC program. Trini is passionate about promoting physician representation in communities of color and using medicine as a vehicle for social justice to achieve health equity. Upon graduating from college, she took 4 gap years to explore unique opportunities including working for Google, doing addiction medicine research, doing social work with individuals experiencing homelessness, sitting on advisory panels for COVID-19 clinical trials, and more. Now, she hopes to use her experiences of overcoming systematic and personal barriers to pave the way for future generations so that they can thrive and not just survive.
Karlos Manzanarez Felix | UCI School of Medicine, PRIME - LC Program
Karlos Manzanarez Felix is a first-generation immigrant, the first in his family to attend medical school in the United States, and a DACA student. He attended Cypress Community College and subsequently transferred to UCLA to complete a degree in Biochemistry. It was through his experiences at UCLA and post-graduation that his drive to improve the care of underserved populations was fostered. He took two gap years to increase his exposure in clinical settings and prepare his application for medical school. Now, he is a first-year medical student at UCISOM and a part of the PRIME-LC program. Although he is currently undecided on specialty choice, he is an active participant in community events, research in surgery, and advocacy opportunities.

WORKSHOP SESSION 2 - OPTION B: Pathways to UCI: My First Year at UCI
LOCATION: MOSS COVE B
The first-year panel will have Fatima Mendoza, Sheily Torres, Montserrant Hernandez, and Katherine Trujillo as panelist. They will share their UCI experience from different perspectives such as being a first-year or first-year transfer student. This workshop will be a safe place to share and ask questions about how to navigate UCI in the first year. The purpose of this Panel is to through storytelling, empower, inform, and reassure the audience that they are heard. The panel will validate each undocumented story as unique and powerful because each narrative is important for this community to rise together and help each other succeed personally or academically.
Emiliana | UCI DREAM Scholars Peer Mentor, Moderator
Emiliana Gallardo Suastegui is a first-generation student who, through her voice and powerful storytelling, captures the importance of breaking cycles in creative ways. She is a Psychology and Social Behavior major, founder of Human Not Alien clothing, and Latina writer who throughout her poems voices her own narrative. Suastegui is a woman from a little village called El Limon Guerrero, in Mexico that encourages her to help her community by being their resource.

Fatima Mendoza | UCI REM Scholar
Fatima is a first-year student interested in pursuing Education Sciences at UCI. She is the proud daughter of immigrant Salvadorian parents and was raised in Los Angeles, California. She is passionate about uplifting Central American voices and representation. In her spare time, Fatima enjoys watching K-Dramas, listening to podcasts, and playing with her cats.

Sheily Torres Maya, pronouns are she/her/ella, is a first-year student at the University of California, Irvine. She is majoring in Business Administration and is the first in her family to attend a four-year university. She proud to identify as Mexican and a Dreamer. Ballet Folklorico de UCI
Ballet Folklorico de UC Irvine is a student run organization that welcomes students, alumni, and community members to participate and learn about a variety of different Mexican histories and traditions through dance and music. BFDUCI’s goal is to create a safe space for individuals of all racial and geographic backgrounds to feel comfortable with freely expressing who they are, whether it be through dance & music or other creative means.

Systems of oppression have consistently had a hand in constructing widespread and harmful narratives. As undocumented folks, it is important to deconstruct those narratives and formulate our own by recognizing the power and agency we hold both as individuals and community members.

Students Advocating For Immigrant Rights & Equity (S.A.F.I.R.E.)
Students Advocating For Immigrant Rights and Equity (SAFIRE) is the only undocumented-student led organization at UC Irvine that seeks to expand resources for all undocumented/immigrant students on-campus. SAFIRE's vision is to raise awareness regarding the issues the undocumented community faces and diversify the image of the undocumented student identity through advocacy efforts.
Litzy Martinez Rodriguez | SAFIRE Chair and Director of Advocacy
Litzy Martinez Rodriguez is a first-generation undocumented student leader studying Business Economics and minoring in Political Science at the UC Irvine. She currently serves as SAFIRE’s Chair and Director of Advocacy. Through her SAFIRE advocacy involvement Litzy helped advocate for the creation of the Dream Project Fellowship which serves to provide professional development and financial compensation to non-DACA students. She is currently working on planning the 2022 Undcugrad Ceremony which serves to commemorate graduating Undocumented students and their accomplishments. After her undergraduate career Litzy plans on attending law school in the future to further her passion for helping underserving communities.
Jhon Carhuaz | SAFIRE Director of External Affairs
Jhon Carhuaz (he/his/him) serving as part Director of External Affairs. He is a third-year Biological Science student with an interest in ICS. He hopes to pursue Medical School and become a family physician with the hopes of giving back to his community, by working towards making healthcare affordable for underrepresented groups such as the undocumented community.

Khris Villacinda | SAFIRE Director of Internal Affairs
Khris Villacinda is currently a second year Chemistry major pursuing a medicinal concentration with hopes of attending grad school. He’s loved SAFIRE ever since his freshman year when he joined as an ACEr and now he serves as the Director of Internal Affairs. As a Firebaugh fellow, board member, and ACE mentor he actively seeks to advocate to improve the experience of future undocumented students at UCI. His plan for next school year is to serve as the Director of Advocacy and to expand the DPF so that more first gen, undocumented students have an equal chance of success as their peers because he believes this program is very helpful in academia and in developing necessary professional skills.
Noelani Bernardo | SAFIRE Director of Marketing
Noelani Bernardo is a third-year undergraduate student at University of California, Irvine who is working to get their B.A. in Psychological Sciences and a minor in Sociology. Currently, Noelani serves as SAFIRE's Director of Marketing. Noelani will be graduating in Spring 2022, where she will then pursue a career in optometry with the goal of opening her own optometry clinic to provide quality healthcare to underserved communities.

Financing graduate school is not a clear cut method! Join our final workshop of the graduate track to learn about personal experiences on financing PhD and master's programs. This workshop will also outline the difference between scholarships, fellowships & grants and how to successfully apply.

Eloisa Amador-Romero | UCI DREAM Center Assistant Director
Eloisa Amador-Romero joined the DREAM Center team as the Associated Director in December 2021. Her passion and commitment of undocumented and immigrant community has pushed her to pursue her career in higher education. Eloisa was a key individual in the establishment of the Titan Dream Center at Cal State Fullerton.
Eloisa is a first-generation college graduate, born and raised in Mexico City, and an undocumented immigrant for 18 years of her life. She earned a Master's in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration from the University of Vermont; and a bachelor's degree in Science in Human Services and a bachelor's degree in Art in Ethnic Studies with an emphasis in Chicano/a Studies at California State University, Fullerton.
Eloisa is passionate for equitable education and access to higher education to all students and she is very excited to be serving the UCI Students and community.
Alejandra Jeronimo Ixta | UCI DREAM Center Program Coordinator
Alejandra Jeronimo Ixta graduated from UCI in 2020 with a B.A. in Anthropology and a B.A. in Criminology. She is a proud Anteater and is excited to be back at UCI. During her time at UCI, she was involved with the undocumented student organization, Students Advocating For Immigrant Rights and Equity (SAFIRE), where she supported and advocated for fellow undocumented students through events and programs hosted by the organization. She has also been involved with the Student Alumni Association and served as Vice President of Membership during her last year at UCI. Alejandra is excited to continue supporting the undocumented student community and their families.
